Backstory

Growing Up

Red Fir left the Golmore Jungle approximately as soon as he could, and good riddance, in his opinion.A one-in-eight chance that he would turn out to be a boy seemed almost ignorable when he was a child, but puberty came too quickly, and within a year he was snatched by the other males for training, to become one of the silent watchers of the wood. In Red's opinion? Training to become a glorified professional assassin. The wood is sacred, he was taught, and protecting its sanctity was going to become his job. He would be taught how to string and shoot a bow, and the hapless souls who dare trespass would meet the business end of an arrow. His arrow. That had not sat well in his stomach; it never did. So he made himself mediocre. The other boys and men of the Golmore did not find this funny, especially when he clearly had the skill, as he repeatedly demonstrated whenever he was asked to kill anything that was not a person. A proud hunter of the Golmore, he was, who could only harm hares and deer, but not a single trespasser. He wasn't silent about it, either. In his opinion that was just murder, plain and simple, and finding yourself lost in the jungle is not a crime he was willing to punish with death. And so it was that with a heart not actually heavy at all he left, looking for greener pastures. Pastures less covered in blood. He left his forest name behind.

Healer Studies

So he travelled west, to fabled Sharlayan. There, he offered to use his skills as a hunter to help the gleaners, and was accepted. For nearly a decade he worked there, but his goal was higher: he wanted to heal. So he combined what he knew of the magicks of the Golmore, the power of the stars, with the lectures he watched here and there. He became an astrologian, and once he was sure of his prowess, he applied for a scholarship.Viera long-livedness helps, and he was nothing but patient. Eventually he was accepted, and could hone his arts of healing and add another tool to his arsenal: that of the sage. He studied, and put all of his being into it, becoming more proficient by the day, contributing his own research and discoveries and inventions into Sharlayan's growing pool of knowledge. And occasionally he added some gleaning into the mix, when he got bored.More time passed, and the Garlean incursions in Eorzea forced Sharlayan to move. They abandoned Dravania, and abandoned their fellows to their fate... a decision which also did not sit well with Red. So rather than straightforwardly join them, Red joined the Students of Baldesion. The Isle of Val became his home, and from there he had much more freedom to do that which Sharlayan so hated: intervene.

The Calamities

When Archon Louisoix formed the Circle of Knowing to try to prevent the coming of the Seventh Umbral Calamity, Red Fir was tempted to join. The virtuous "patience" he had in spades for being from such a long-lived species worked against him, however, and he dawdled too long. Louisoix died, and the Calamity was not averted. He despaired, but could not give up. He left the Isle of Val... just in time for it to be swallowed up by who knows what. Which just figured, didn't it? So he returned to Sharlayan, and when the Isle was found again, went there immediately to help with investigations. There he met the Warrior of Light and the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, and that's when he found his calling. He couldn't not join them. He just couldn't.

Norvrandt

As one of the people who often hung around the Warrior, he, too, got kidnapped to the First by the Crystal Exarch. Having been one of G'raha Tia's colleagues as a Student of Baldesion, G'raha's pretense never fooled him. But he played along—the man must've had his reasons. He spent time with the Night's Blessed and Y'shtola, where he worked to develop a version of Sharlayan Astrology that could still work even in eternal night.Once he had that down, and before the Warrior of Light could come, he left the Raktika and began travelling the world as an adventurer and, most importantly, a healer, trying to rescue people from Sin Eaters and other grisly fates. He checked in periodically with the other Scions, but mostly kept to himself. Once the Warrior did arrive, though, he joined them promptly, and helped wherever he could.

After The Final Days

The Final Days saw him working with Sharlayan once more. While the Warrior and the other Scions tried to forestall the End of Days, he worked with the gleaners to help prepare for the worst and gather supplies. He's always been of the opinion that one should not put all of their eggs into a single basket, and Sharlayan's basket could better benefit from his skills. Then, just as suddenly as they started, the Final Days ended, not so Final after all. His work won't be wasted, of course; Labyrinthos still thrives. But now that they are finally at peace... he can help rebuild the Students of Baldesion, as a former member himself.Always busy, but that's how he likes to be.

Personality

Red Fir is somewhat obsessed with efficiency, although not really in a way he talks about much. It's just always in the back of his mind: what's the least number of steps he can take to achieve his goal, sometimes even literally. What does he want, what does he have, how can he use the latter to acquire the former. And what he wants is to have a positive impact on the world. He wants the world to have been better for his existence. Killing trespassers in the Golmore Jungle? Doesn't really strike him as making anything better. But using his hunting skills to help people learn more about the world? That's way more up his alley. But he's also extremely curious, and likes learning things. Sharlayan of all places attracted him because of this, a place of learning and study where knowledge is held sacred. He prides himself in his ability to stare unflinchingly at the truth and not be held back by old beliefs and tradition. It's led him this far. He's very talkative, especially when you talk about his Special Interests™, and he'll talk your ear off if you're not careful. But he's a good listener, too, and often has insightful advice to offer. At times he can be acidic, and his sense of humour does tend sarcastic and dry. He can also often be taken by fits of righteous rage, and his temper can often get the best of him and cause him to say things he doesn't mean and that he later regrets. He's had time to work on this, so he's not as bad as he used to be when he was a young hunter in the Golmore, but it's still something that will always be a part of him.

Relationships

  • Krile and G'raha Tia As members of the Students of Baldesion, they have all studied together at one point or another. Red has been a member since very close to its founding, though he was not one of the ones entrusted with the secrets of Eureka. Still, he has served both as a mentor and friend to them.

  • Erenville As a fellow gleaner (and one of the few male viera around), Erenville was quickly the target of Red Fir's curiosity and attention. And while his formal and impersonal airs might deter other people, Red Fir managed to pierce through the shell and forge something that could be called a friendship with him.

Plot Hooks

  • Once a Gleaner After all this time, he's still got a soft spot for that one job. He likes physical activity, likes hunting and running and climbing, and sometimes he'll be running around all over creation on some voluntary job for the Sharlayan gleaners' guild.

  • Occasional Adventurer He still rejects Sharlayan's noninterventionistic policies, and will sometimes lend his talents to adventuring parties here and there. He has enough anima to be able to use aetherytes all over the realm, and will very often join groups tackling on problems around the world if his restorative magicks can be of aid.

  • Of the Golmore Is your character also from the Golmore Jungle? They could have met or even have grown up together, decades ago. He has had his story and his reasons for leaving, and other people have theirs. How do they meet?

  • Student of Baldesion He managed to avoid being sent into the Lifestream by Galuf Baldesion's plans by sheer luck, but he still was and is very much a member of this group of scholars. He doesn't possess the echo, himself, but he does want to study it and primals - or, more recently, the Ancients' creation magicks. He's also on hand to help Krile and G'raha restore the group and refill their ranks.

OOC

Hello! This character is my current main FFXIV RP character. I've been RPing on and off for well over fifteen years, now, and since I started playing XIV shortly before the release of Shadowbringers it's quickly become my new home.I'm pretty goshdarn friendly, you can just say "hi" and I'll always respond. You can also pretty much always find me on Discord at red.#9999. I tend to be around during Eastern times, although actually I'm from Brazil so I'm one or two hours ahead of actual Eastern (depending on daylight savings).

  • Gilgamesh-based (but of course I can also go anywhere as needed).

  • I'm a fast typer, and my posts will reflect their content; sometimes I may write a paragraph, sometimes a single line.

  • I am also open to pretty much all types of RP, although anything permanent should be discussed first and I do prefer longer stories over one-shots.

  • "All types of RP" includes ERP, yes. Mind that his "equipment" is nonstandard, though.

  • I'm willing to alter bits and pieces of his backstory to fit others'. Not all of it, but we can discuss and make something work!

  • Here's my Lodestone profile.

Hit me up! I don't bite (nonconsensually).
